Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) is an annual holiday that commemorates the day when the last slaves in Galveston, Texas were told of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863 by then President, Abraham Lincoln.
